I have been working with the DOORS requirements management tool for well over 10 years now, starting with version 4.  DOORS is still going strong and is now up at version 9.

DOORS Next Generation (DOORS NG) is the new kid on the block, and is a web based application based on the jazz platform.  The integrations to other jazz tools are seamless, the user interface is more intuitive, and there is no need to install anything.  There are a few structural differences between the two tools; the most obvious being that DOORS NG has artifacts (objects, or requirements) that can be directly reused in multiple places.  For this reason, there are some decisions that need to be made before a project can be moved from DOORS to DOORS NG, and it is not a ‘just press the button’ sort of an upgrade.

I have kept aware of the progress of DOORS NG, and am optimistic for its future.  I haven’t, up until now, really dived in and found the gotchas, the undiscovered gems, and the routine experience.  I now have a focus on it for my day job, and I will be sharing some of my discoveries, basic and advanced, over here, along with links to other available content.

I am starting on a journey of discovery, and welcome any traveling companions.
